The study is soberly titled “ICT Equipment and Sustainability: Awareness and Behavior”. But through this eight-page document, put online by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) in mid-May, we measure our inordinate appetite for Internet services. What was until now only a vague impression materializes in numbers in this very interesting study that implicitly calls for more responsible digital behavior on our part.

First OFS observation, an explosion in the amount of data consumed via our smartphones, with an average annual increase of 60% over the last ten years. In 2022 (the latest figures available), the total volume was about 1.8 million terabytes, while in 2017 it was only 500,000 terabytes. Users take full advantage of the possibilities of 4G, as well as those of 5G, primarily for streaming services, especially video, which take up a lot of bandwidth, sometimes saturating networks in city centers during peak hours.
