As most applications, YouTube has a dark mode, a light mode, and can automatically take on the appearance of your device’s theme. In this article, learn how to activate or deactivate dark mode on the web and mobile versions of YouTube.

YouTube has had a dark mode since 2017

Dark mode on YouTube is not new. In fact, it has been on the site since 2017 when you go there via a web browser. Mobile users of the service will have to wait a few more months to see this layout set to the iOS and Android versions.

As a reminder, dark mode offers several advantages. It actually helps reduce eye fatigue, especially in dimly lit places or at night. It saves energy by displaying darker shades, offers higher contrast that can make reading easier, and also reduces exposure to blue light emitted by screens, which can disrupt sleep cycles.

How to enable dark mode on YouTube

On YouTube, the procedures for activating dark mode are not the same depending on whether you use a web browser or a mobile app. Find out how to track each device below.

How to activate or deactivate dark mode in the browser

In your browser, here’s how to activate or deactivate dark mode on YouTube:

  • Go to the YouTube home page,
  • Click on the three-dot menu in the upper right corner of the screen, next to your profile,
  • Then choose Look:option set by default Clear the thread,
  • Finally, choose the in-between mode Device theme so that it adapts to the theme selected on your device, Dark theme Or Theme clean.

Note that your choice only applies to the browser from which you performed the operation.

How to enable or disable dark mode on a mobile app

On the mobile app, whether you’re using an Android or iOS smartphone, the process is the same. Follow these few steps to enable or disable dark mode (see image above):

  • Tap your profile picture in the lower right corner of the screen,
  • Open the settings using the cogwheel symbol in the upper right corner,
  • press General settingsthen select Look,
  • Choose your favorite way in between Device theme, Clear the thread Or Dark theme.
