The Léonard de Vinci cluster, which consists of three higher education institutions, Talan innovation consulting group and the company RN Conseil, publish the study on the use of artificial intelligence by students. This is based on two surveys: the first conducted before the AI hackathon, which collected 1,119 student responses, and the second conducted after the event, which recorded 711 responses. Here are the lessons learned from the study.
Note: the research was conducted with fourth-year students of the Leonardo da Vinci Center, specializing in the fields of management, engineering, design and creation. While providing relevant information on students’ use of AI, the panel cannot be considered representative of the entire student population.
99% of students use generative artificial intelligence
In just over a year, generative artificial intelligence has become entrenched in the habits of students. The study reveals that 99% of students use generative artificial intelligence, 92% use it regularly, and 30% use it daily. Here are five of the most common uses and benefits:
- Increase your knowledge (65%)
- Increase your productivity (65%)
- Perform a search (64%)
- Save time in everyday life (62%)
- Generate texts (56%)
Artificial intelligence seems to have established itself in the practice of students in the long term: 65% specifically confirm that the presence of generative artificial intelligence is one of the main criteria when choosing a company.
ChatGPT Plus is used more than Gemini and Copilot
No surprise, ChatGPT it is by far the most used AI tool by students (see picture of one). 88% of respondents use the free version, while 30% opt for the paid ChatGPT Plus plan, compared to 27% for Gemini and 24% for Co-pilot. In terms of image generators, OpenAI is also in the lead: 29% of students use it PANELcompared to 24% of those who opted for The middle of the trip.
The main advantage of ChatGPT, according to respondents, is its ease of use, which is appreciated by 95% of students, far ahead of its reliability, which is recognized by only 68% of the panel. A worrying number, as 52% of students report that ChatGPT influences their choices, and 51% admit that they would struggle without it.
Students are aware of the risks of AI
Although 70% of respondents have a positive opinion about artificial intelligence, they are still aware of the risks associated with its emergence. Among the main concerns, the security of personal and professional data comes first for 80% of respondents, followed by the increasing influence of technology giants (64%) and the unreliability of answers (59%).
Concerns also extend to social and environmental aspects, as well as the impact these tools can have in manipulating opinion, particularly through the proliferation of deepfakes. This is why 49% of surveyed students fear that generative artificial intelligence tools will not be successful a risk to democracy.
