A mother’s relationship with her child is unique, and every motherhood experience is different. That is why I offer you a list of diametrically opposed series on the subject!
1 Working mothers on Netflix
Netflix is not stingy with series about mothers, as evidenced by the critical success in its time of One day at a time. But it is another comedy, much less known in France, that we would like to focus on today. As its title suggests, this Canadian sitcom explores the daily lives of four women who must return to work at the end of their maternity leave.
This work comes from the mind of Catherine Reitman, one of the main actresses of the series, but also an author who comes from a great Anglo-Saxon comedy family (her father is none other than Ivan Reitman, director of both Ghostbusters originals and other essential films of the genre). And Catherine is determined to continue the family tradition!
She plays Kate, one of the four heroines Working mothers who will have to juggle her work, her relationships and her new role as a mother. The series manages to capture the beauty and difficulties of motherhood with a humor that allows you to understand the experience of new mothers much better than many other series on the subject.
2 Little Bird on Arte.tv
The difficulties of a mother’s life can sometimes take a tragic turn. If certain series like the comedy-drama Better things on Canal + (by and with Pamela Adlon, known for her role as Marcy in Californication) manages to inject humor in the most difficult moments, others, for their part, do not hesitate to attack the complexity of these relationships head on. This is the case of this series available until August 21 on Arte.tv.
Little Bird it takes us to Canada, this time in 1968. It was during this time that the young Native American who gives the series its name (played by Darla Contois) was taken from her family by child protective services. He is one of the 20,000 children affected by the Scoop of the 1960s: the kidnapping of many First Nations, Métis and Inuit children with the aim of having them adopted by white families around the world.
One of the highlights of this drama series is the conflicted relationship between Bezhig Little Bird and his adoptive mother (played by Lisa Edelstein, best known for her role as Cuddy in Doctor House). Here the whole tragedy of motherhood is shown from the child’s point of view.
3 The child on Prime Video
Whether we cry or laugh at them, these series all have something in common: they try until motherhood is not easy. And this horror comedy gets it right. It tells the misadventures of Natasha, a 38-year-old young woman (played by the English actress and humorist Michelle de Swarte) who finds herself with an unexpected child.
Very soon, the little monster turns out to be particularly tyrannical and will make his mother go through real hell. Having fun with horrible clichés, The child offers a suspenseful metaphor about motherhood and the place of mothers in our society. A must-watch for all those who want to explore these topics through a prism far from the usual clichés.
