6 New Features Expected in iOS 18
Siri improvement, artificial intelligence integration, new design… many rumors have been circulating in recent weeks! Here’s a rundown of the new features expected with the iOS 18 update on iPhone, which could be “one of the biggest iOS updates, if not the most important”according to expert Mark Gurman:
- AI-enhanced features: iOS 18 is expected to integrate a set of AI-driven features in various apps such as Safari, Notes, Photos and Messages. Among the features offered: artificial intelligence-based photo editing, voice transcription, improved Spotlight searches, suggested replies to received messages and emails, emojis generated by artificial intelligence, summaries of received notifications… Its iWork suite (which includes software Pages, Keynote and Numbers) are also expected to get AI-based features.
- Siri: Apple’s voice assistant should benefit from a significant update. Specifically, Siri could be powered by Apple’s Large Language Models (LLM), to offer more natural interaction and more accurate results.
- New design options: iOS 18 could offer iPhones a significant design change, with “major innovations” according to Mark Gurman. The home screen should be more customizable, with the ability to freely place applications and widgets, like what Android already offers. It would be possible “create empty spaces, rows and columns between app icons”. It should also be possible to change the color of apps.
- Arrival of new emojis: First, 8 new emojis it should be coming to iPhone soon. On the other hand, iOS 18 should allow users to take advantage of AI-generated and personalized emojis in real-time when composing a message. In practice, this means that emojis will be tailored to best convey the emotion at that moment. An option that resembles a function Emoji kitchen from Google.
- Support for RCS protocol: In late 2023, Apple confirmed adoption of the RCS protocol for iPhone. Defined as the successor to SMS, RCS will enable better interoperability between devices and operators by relying on the Internet to transmit messages instead of telephone networks. In particular, it will be easier to create group chats, transfer large files or even get keystroke indicators (for example: X says…). Apple may therefore implement the RCS protocol during the iOS 18 update.
- AI chatbot: Apple is reportedly looking for a partner to develop an AI chatbot. Really, the company approached Google, OpenAI and Anthropic to negotiate a possible agreement. WWDC should be an opportunity to learn more about the topic, before possible integration after the release of iOS 18.
If Apple sticks to its usual schedule, iOS 18 should be unveiled in September, at the same time asiPhone 16. To find a list of iPhone models compatible with iOS 18, you can refer This item.
