The comic by Daniel Freedman and Robert Sammelin is published by HiComics in France this May 22 and focuses on the quest for revenge by a woman betrayed by her family.
With the the comics KaliHiComics continues to develop its HiGraphics version by inviting the reader to follow the furious and violent epic of Kali, leader of a gang left for dead in a post-apocalyptic universe. Eager to take revenge and overthrow the established order, the warrior throws himself into a tough fight, in which the authors develop a fascinating story about survival and human relationships.
A sense of urgency
Kali it has the strength of action comics aware of its nature and the path to take. Daniel Freedman (screenwriter) and Robert Sammelin (artist) never get lost in overexposure. On the contrary, they involve the reader through a tangible and authentic world, which does not need to affirm its existence in order to be true. The plot begins as Kali, wounded and imprisoned, manages to escape from her captors to find her old gang.
In this devastated world, presented and depicted as inspired by the universe Mad Max, broken figures and tyrannical icons are legion. There are many groups and factions, and the law of the strongest rules these lands. It is precisely around the question of submission and the loss of identity that Kali’s gang is torn apart, launching the protagonist on his quest for revenge.
Daniel Freedman builds his entire plot on a succession of explosive action scenes. Little speaking, history is woven with movement. Kali escapes, Kali falls, Kali hurts, Kali is hurt, Kali reveals herself and makes all kinds of threats throughout the album. Resilience and revenge are at the heart of the subject and, thanks to the determination in the action, the characterization of the character is skillfully constructed. Faced with the difficulty of the processes, the attachment to the protagonist is immediate, despite its ambiguity or the violence of its reprisals.
The comic also has a sense of urgency established by a surprising twist encountered along the way. Kali must act quickly and from this situation arises a comfortable feeling for the reader, aware of being faced with a story focused on a very short duration, also avoiding an overexposure. The work never strays and remains focused on its main plot. The author thus portrays his world, his problems and his characters in a few pages, without ever standing still.
Illustrate the movement
Visually, Robert Sammelin enriches the solid writing with constant inventiveness. Kali is an action comic and the artist renews himself according to the encounters. The nerve arises from the cut, the angle of view, the succession of boxes and the artist embraces in turn the sense of urgency dictated by the story with a very cinematic approach to the movement, some pages even giving the feeling of follow a sequence plan.
Sometimes, he adopts a more psychedelic style, especially during particularly graphic sequences. Robert Sammelin gives thus Kali its color, its atmosphere and rely on the various representations of contemporary and old or post-apo Westerns to bring this sunken world to life.
Between madness and blood, the work manages to develop and question human relationships. A work marked by male-female relations, by the notion of authority and rebellion, the comic has a universal and timeless aspect, bringing narrative simplicity.
