The impact of generative AI on students


As part of the transdisciplinary Hackathon around the social challenges of AI, a study was carried out by the Pôle Léonard de Vinci et Talan with 1600 4th year higher education students. This survey aims to reveal students’ views and use of generative AI.

An original study on young people’s view of AI

The Pôle Léonard de Vinci and Talan have just published a study that measures the impact of AI on the daily life of young people. Conducted by Joachim Massias, Director of the MBA Data and Innovation Clusterthis investigation compares the AI ​​vision of the entire French population with that of young students.

During a five-day Hackathon, 1,600 students of the Center’s three schools responded to a survey on AI. This study is a world first, the purpose is to analyze the impact of generative AI technologies on 4th year students in various courses such as Management, engineering and digital.

Conducted in two waves, before and after the Hackathon, this survey reveals remarkable indicators:

  • 99% of students use AI compared to 60% of the French;
  • 92% of students use AI regularly compared to 32% of the French;
  • 1/3 of young people invest 20 euros per month to use Chat GPT 4;
  • 72% of students have a positive view of AI;
  • 52% of students consider that AI influences their choices.

Generative AIs have a direct impact on pedagogy and the way students work. Thanks to them, students save time and improve their efficiency in their work every day. The ease of use of AI is recognized by 95% of students and 51% of them indicated that they would have difficulty doing without it ChatGPT.

Joachim Massias, Director of the AI ​​MBA, emphasizes that this study is a world first in terms of its subject, its scale and the diversity of the students’ academic backgrounds. It highlights the ability of students to adapt to this technology, with 99% of them integrating generative AI into their daily lives, compared to only 22% of French over 35s. The interdisciplinary transversal Hackathon is a effective learning tool to accelerate the adoption of generative AI by companies.

AI has become an essential professional tool for companies and their future talents. 92% of students see their daily professional life with a massive presence of AI, 88% consider it important for an employer to make generative AI available to their employees and 65% consider the presence of generative AI as a criterion to choose their future business.

The Hackathon, an effective educational system

The Hackathon revealed critical insights into integrating generative AI into students’ academic and professional journeys. 77% of students found that the Hackathon allowed them to better understand the problems surrounding AI, 74% better analyzed the advantages and disadvantages related to AI and 83% stated that generative AI did not replace reflections with other members of the team.

Laure Bertrand, Director of Soft Skills, Sustainable Development explains that generative AI is essential in higher education. This needs to change teaching practices.
