“Artificial intelligence has increased my productivity. As a data scientist at L’Oréal, I am in the Evaluation Intelligence team, responsible for studying and evaluating product quality (shampoo or moisturizer), formulas and packaging for all brands in the band. For example, we participated in the design of a device that provides an initial dermatological diagnosis (blackheads, wrinkles, skin condition, etc.) based on photos of customers’ faces taken in the store. This analysis helps the advisor to recommend products to clients. To develop such a tool, we need to understand how to extract data from images (related to wrinkle intensity for example).
Before arrival Artificial Intelligence generatively, I would do a whole documentary research by going to various sites, I would ask people around me. Then I would make summaries of the various techniques that make it possible to extract relevant data from this or that image and analyze their relevance. Today, I do much of this work using L’OréalGPT, an internal tool developed on the basis of ChatGPT and trained on our databases. In this way, I immediately focus on the right tools and save valuable time from the very beginning of the project.
An ally for communication with non-engineers
Another example: I code for a good part of the day. When I start a line of code, Copilot, a Microsoft tool, understands what I’m coding and suggests what to do next. A bit like when you write an e-mail and the rest of the sentence comes. It is very useful. Of course, I always control what the AI offers me, it’s not 100% reliable.
Less technical and more surprising, AI also helps me deliver messages effectively. Sometimes I need to explain complex things related to my work as an engineer to colleagues with less technical knowledge. For example, I asked the AI how to illustrate in the most understandable way the difference between two ways of working that I wanted to present to my manager. The AI was quick to suggest a relevant analogy and thus helped me highlight the benefits of the way I was recommending! »
