Microsoft’s DLSS competitor will be exclusive to Copilot+ PCs

At least for a while. This technology, which should make life easier for developers, could ultimately take much longer to be adopted.

With scaling technology that multiplies (DLSS, FSR, XESS…), it has become difficult for game programmers to be on all fronts and adapt to all configurations ofthe computers. As such, the announcement of Windows Automatic Super Resolution a few months ago it sounded like good news … before new details put our feet on the ground.

Future-oriented technology

It is supposed to act as an intermediary between all the pre-existing technologies, and in the end it will dispense all the hardware currently on the market. This is essentially what we understand by a signed decryption VideoCardzwhich says Windows Auto SR will initially be reserved for Copilot+ computers with a Snapdragon X Elite chip.

An ARM processor therefore, on which Microsoft is banking heavily, and which according to the company represents the future of Windows. However, its compatibility with everyday software remains to be tested and its performance in the game is still to be tested. However, it is now clear that only these processors will be able to take advantage of Auto SR when the feature launches. Also, only some manually selected games will be able to take advantage of this, Microsoft’s announcement.

“Auto Super Resolution (Auto SR) seamlessly integrates with Windows to automatically improve the frame rate of existing games in real time while delivering detailed visuals on screen, offering a balance that exceeds what your PC hardware can handle At initial launch, this feature will be exclusive to Qualcomm Snapdragon® X Elite processor-equipped PCs.”

A gradual rollout?

The terms used by Microsoft suggest that this only relates to the launch period of its new upscaling functionality. In other words, it is very possible that AMD and Intel processors could one day take advantage of this. But will these be the new Copilot+ compatible models, or will current or previous generation CPUs also be affected? The doubt still remains.

The Snapdragon X Elite processors are advertised by Microsoft as the fastest on the market, at least when it comes to tasks involving AI. They are said to be faster than the M3 chips developed by Apple, but their gaming performance remains to be proven. That said, supersampling technology like ASR could certainly help this type of component to offer the best compromise between graphics and fluidity.

Rumor has it that even Sony is planning to integrate a feature like this on his PS5 Pro. A mid-generation console that could be released at the end of the year.
